What is a Dental Emergency?
While most dental problems can wait for a scheduled appointment, some situations require immediate care. A dental emergency is any situation that poses a risk to your oral health, and it can range from a cracked tooth to a severe infection. If you think you may be experiencing a dental emergency, the first thing you should do is contact your dentist. If they are unavailable, go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
In the meantime, try to avoid eating or drinking anything that could potentially exacerbate the problem. If you are experiencing bleeding, bite on a gauze pad or piece of cloth to help stop the bleeding. And if you have a cracked tooth, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth and rinsing your mouth with hot water, as this could cause further discomfort.
By familiarizing yourself with the signs of a dental emergency, you can help ensure that your oral health is always safeguarded.
How to Handle a Dental Emergency
If you find yourself in a dental emergency, the first thing you should do is contact our office. We will schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to help alleviate your pain and prevent further damage:
- Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water and floss gently around the affected tooth to remove any food that might be stuck there. If you don’t have any floss on hand, you can use a clean piece of string or thread. Ibuprofen can also help to reduce swelling and pain.
- Chipped teeth: Save any pieces of teeth that you find and bring them with you to your appointment. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling.
- Cracked teeth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling. Do not attempt to remove any pieces of teeth that may be broken off.
- Lost fillings: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth if necessary. Over-the-counter dental cement can be used to temporarily place lost fillings until you can see us.
- Objects caught between teeth: Gently floss around the object to remove it. Do not try to use sharp objects like pins or needles as this could damage your tooth further.
